Rec center provides update on activities, events

The Sanibel Recreation Center reported on upcoming programs and activities.

Letters of Love: A Kindness Campaign for Alzheimer’s Awareness will take place from now through Nov. 21. Community members of all ages are encouraged to write letters, notes or cards filled with encouragement and appreciation; artwork, poems and children’s drawings are also welcome. They can be dropped off at the center for distribution to local memory care facilities, assisted living centers and caregiver support groups. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 21.

The Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter will have the Brain Bus onsite on Nov. 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. to offer free education and resources about the disease. The mobile outreach initiative brings expert staff who share information on early detection, brain health, risk reduction, caregiving and local support services.

The Alzheimer’s Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter will present “The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” on Nov. 8 at noon. Attendees will learn how to recognize the 10 warning signs, understand the next steps, and discover the support available to them and their loved ones. Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required.

Slice To Meet You — Pie Social will be held on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Attendees can bring their Pie-Casso creation to share. Registration is required.

“Memory Lane,” a photo exhibit celebrating meaningful moments and the memories that shape the community, will be on display from Nov. 8-20 in honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

Author and the “Medicare Mama” Sylvia A. Gordon, JD, will give an informative presentation on Nov. 12 at noon. She will discuss “Why Are My Drug Prices Going Up?” Gordon will explain the recent changes in Medicare’s drug coverage, factors contributing to rising prescription costs and how to make informed decisions during open enrollment and beyond. Registration is required.

The center is open on Mondays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New and current members can call 239-472-0345 or stop by the front desk for help with setting up their CivicRec account. A variety of memberships, passes and punch cards are available.

Sanibel Beach Parking Permits are available for purchase. For residents and property owners, A (beach only) stickers cost $14 and A/C (beach and boat ramp) stickers cost $113. Bring a valid ID, current registration for each vehicle, proof of residency or ownership, and payment. For non-residents and non-property owners, B (beach only) stickers cost $300 and B/C (beach and boat ramp) stickers cost $399. B/C stickers are limited to 150. Bring a valid ID, current registration for each vehicle and payment.
