The Lee County Electric Cooperative (LCEC) reported that it will conduct system improvements throughout Sanibel and Captiva to further harden the electric grid and enhance long-term reliability.

Following recent hurricanes, LCEC restoration efforts were focused on restoring power as quickly and safely as possible. Some areas sustained greater damage than others, and in certain cases, temporary repairs were made to speed restoration.

Crews are now revisiting the entire system to ensure all repairs are permanent and the grid is even more resilient against future storms. More than half of the work has already been completed and is expected to be finalized by year-end.

“Every effort is being made to minimize traffic impacts and keep vehicles flowing smoothly during this work,” it shared. “However, some work will require LCEC contractors to operate within roadways.”

On Oct. 27, roadwork began to take place on Periwinkle Way on Sanibel. Contract crews will complete the project as efficiently and quickly as possible. In limited cases, bike path traffic may be temporarily redirected for safety.

“LCEC appreciates the patience and understanding of residents and visitors while these critical improvements are made to strengthen the island’s electric infrastructure, ensuring reliable service now and for years to come,” it shared.
