Junonia found on Captiva
Tara Lanigan, of New York City, New York, found a junonia on Nov. 9 at about 8:45 a.m. near Turner Beach on Captiva. She was walking in the water and the colors stuck out to her, so she reached down and picked up the shell. “I didn’t even want to say it out loud because I didn’t believe it could be true, and my mom said, ‘Oh my gosh, you found a junonia!” Lanigan said. “I couldn’t believe it — it was so exciting for all of us!” She added that her parents live on Captiva and she has been coming to the island since she was a baby. Lanigan is an avid sheller, as is her whole family. “I’ve found many amazing shells, but never a junonia,” she said. “Captiva is my happy place, and it was so special to find that.” To report a shell find, contact 239-472-1587 or trepecki@breezenewspapers.com.
