Historical village to present film screening, discussion
Tickets are available for the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village’s next Twilight Talk program.
The next one in the series, “Wreckage, Resilience & Recovery: THE HISTORY OF HURRICANES ON SANIBEL,” will take place on Nov. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at BIG ARTS on Sanibel, with doors opening at 6 p.m. Held in partnership with BIG ARTS, it will feature a film screening and discussion.
“There’s definitely an interest in the documentaries that we’re producing with Ken (Sneeden),” village Executive Director Pamela Miner said. “We want to share our history, and the documentaries is one of the tools that we are using.”
About an hour long, “Wreckage, Resilience & Recovery” premiered in February 2024.
In the century before destructive Hurricane Ian battered Sanibel in September of 2022, the island was hit at least six times by monster hurricanes: 1910, 1921, 1926, 1944, 1960 and 2004. Some of these brought deadly storm surges. Imagine a time without warning systems and no Causeway for escape. Taken from historic transcripts, hear the actual words of early settlers brought to life by voice actors.
“It’s a nice scope and overview of about 100-plus years of hurricanes,” she said.
“For 100 years, we’ve had these experiences of hurricanes on Sanibel and how each of those shaped the natural environment, the community,” Miner added. “It shows that progression of response, recovery and resilience each time.”
After the screening, Sneeden will discuss “Documentary as Art Form” as the filmmaker.
“The process as an artistic expression and as an art form,” she said.
Sneeden is an award-winning journalist and television station executive. Founded in 1991, his Fort Myers-based multimedia company produces high-impact videos and multimedia presentations for national clients. In 2016, Sneeden brought his skills to the islands. His research ethic, along with his passion for local history, has resulted in numerous full-length documentaries created for the village, along with the Captiva Island Historical Society.
“We’ll also have a Q&A,” Miner said.
Tickets are $25.
Popcorn will be available, along with a cash bar starting at 6 p.m.
The public is invited to reserve a seat.
“It’s a great community gathering to learn about the history of hurricanes on Sanibel, but also learning about the art of documentary filmmaking,” she said. “This is local history, this is our history.”
“We’re very excited about the upcoming collaborations that we have with the Sanibel historical museum this year,” BIG ARTS Executive Director Lee Ellen Harder added. “It’s been since before the hurricane that we’ve been able to collaborate — we hope you’ll join us at BIG ARTS.”
