Chapel to resume weekly service with start of season
On Nov. 9, Sunday services will resume at the Captiva Chapel by the Sea for the 77th season.
The Rev. Dr. Doug Dortch invites all to attend the inter-denominational worship, which will be held weekly at 11 a.m. through April. He and his wife, Judy, are marking their final year of a three-year ministry with the chapel. As is the chapel tradition, each ministry leader serves for a three-year term.
At the first service, Holy Communion will be distributed and hymns will be sung by the congregation. Music will be provided by Lynne Dugan, who has served as the music director for the past 19 years.
“Attendees will be seated both inside our newly raised and supported church building and outside in the colorful folding chairs, which are a preferred spot for many of our regulars and visitors,” it shared.
“Rev. Dortch can be spotted through his open window next to the pulpit,” the chapel added.
After Hurricane Milton, the chapel was rewired, with new speakers installed, for those seated outside.
“Our 120-year-old building has withstood many hurricanes, but last year’s Milton pushed it off of its foundation,” it shared. “Thanks to our own leaders, Bob Johnson and Jake Miller, plus an island newcomer since the storms — Davie Shoring Co. — the building is four steps higher and leveled.”
The weekly service will be livestreamed on Facebook for those unable to attend, as well as posted on the chapel’s website and YouTube channel. Services from the past season can also be found online.
“Please come early and be careful while parking in the lot we share with the Captiva Civic Association or on the roads — one side only, as requested by the fire chief,” the chapel shared.
