The community has an opportunity to raise funds to support the fight against breast cancer.

The Sanibel Recreation Center will host the Ride for the Cure on Oct. 11 from 9 to 10 a.m. Both members and non-members are invited to participate, with the proceeds to benefit Susan G. Komen.

“It’s a way to honor anyone living or past who has lost their fight or continues to struggle with breast cancer,” Recreation Department Marketing & Events Coordinator Denise Dillon said. “Also, it’s another way to bring awareness to an organization that helps women and men around the country.”

One in eight women in the United States will be impacted by breast cancer in their lifetime. One the world’s largest breast cancer organizations, Susan G. Komen supports more research than any other nonprofit outside of the U.S. government, while providing real-time help to those facing the disease.

Dillon explained that there are two ways for people to take part in the event.

Those interested can simply show up day of and participate. No registration is required, but non-members will need to purchase a day pass for a nominal fee. The rec center has also created a team, which people can join and raise additional funds by soliciting donations from family and friends.

Another way to support the cause without taking part is to donate to the rec center’s team.

As for the event itself, participants will take part in a one-hour cycling class, which will be led by instructor Ginger Brien. Dillon noted that the theme and music for the program will be inspirational. Additionally, people will be able to fill out a sign for their bike for who they are riding for or why.

“We’ll have light refreshments after the ride for all the participants,” she added.

The community is invited to come out and take part or support the cause with a donation.

“It’s to remember anyone they lost or anyone who continues to fight their battle,” Dillon said. “And it’s an amazing event for people who cycle on a normal regular basis to come together in support of one common goal that day.”
