Sanibel fire board OKs final budget and millage rate
The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District’s commission adopted the final millage rate and budget for fiscal year 2025-26 at its second and final budget hearing.
On Sept. 29, the commissioners voted unanimously 2-0 to approve an operating millage rate of 1.3915 mills, which is greater than the rolled-back rate of 1.1650 mills by 19.44%.
The 1.3915 mills will generate ad valorem revenue of $7,841,718 for the district.
The commission also voted 2-0 to approve a final budget of $28,125,694 for the fiscal year.
The Lee County Property Appraiser’s Office has certified the gross taxable value for operating purposes not exempt from taxation within the district at $5,635,442,483.
Prior to the votes, Fire Chief Kevin Barbot explained that the second and final budget hearing was being held again because of an oversight in one of the resolutions approved at the original hearing on Sept. 16. One of the sentences lacked wording regarding the rolled-back rate and percentage.
