Thanks to the efforts of riders in last year’s Annual Howard S. Danner Jr. Wheels for Wheels Cycling Challenge, 280 wheelchairs were delivered to 11 Rotary Clubs in Belize in October. Many of the recipients will be younger people who have had amputations due to diabetes complications. Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club members John Danner, Barb Ellis, Linda Graves, Bob and Roxanne Stern, and Michael Young, as well as North Naples Club Rotarians Joe Badway, Roger Dick and Charlotte Nal, accompanied the delivery of the wheelchairs. This year’s fundraiser will take place on April 5. Danner, retired minister from the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ, and fellow Rotarian John Henshaw are the challenge co-chairs. Danner founded the event in honor of his father, the Rev. Howard S. Danner Jr., a pastor and college professor who was struck by a drunk driver while biking and was paralyzed from the waist down, leaving him in a wheelchair for his remaining 17 years.
