The Sanibel-Captiva Kiwanis Club is planning for its 51st Santa Run on Dec. 23 on the islands.

For those interested in having Santa visit their Sanibel or Captiva home, the club can schedule him to deliver a present to that special someone — young or old. To participate, take the following steps:

– Choose a gift for each recipient, then wrap and clearly label each gift with the recipient’s name. Place all of the gifts into one sack for the household, along with the delivery address and any special instructions for each gift recipient; include the name of the adult coordinating the visit. For deliveries to condos, please provide detailed directions, including a map if necessary.

– Drop off the sack at the Sanibel Fire and Rescue District’s Station 171, at 2351 Palm Ridge Road, Sanibel, before Dec. 23 at 5 p.m.

To help Santa tailor his message and make the visit even more special, include some personal tidbits about each recipient when labeling their gifts.

On Dec. 23, Santa and his merry elves will depart from the fire station at about 5:30 p.m. and make deliveries between 6 and 8 p.m. When Santa arrives, he will wish the entire household a “Merry Christmas” and personally hand out gifts to every recipient — perfect for capturing holiday photos.

The Santa Run was started 51 years ago by Kiwanian Dick Muench, who was inspired by a similar event in Syracuse, New York. With the support of the club, the first event delivered 110 presents to 66 households, primarily children from The Sanibel School.
