County announces set-out date for storm debris collection
Residents of unincorporated Lee County, which includes Captiva, are asked to place any remaining Hurricane Milton debris at the roadside by the end of day on Dec. 8 to prepare for final collection.
Starting on Dec. 9, debris trucks will begin their final collections. Any debris placed at the right-of-way after final collection will not be picked up by the county’s contractor, which is why it is critical for residents to take note of the set-out date.
Tips to ensure pickup of storm debris:
– Set storm debris at the curb away from normal household trash and recycling. It will be collected and documented separately.
– Make three separate piles: Appliances, yard waste, and construction and demolition debris.
– Set out storm debris only for this final push. Debris crews will not collect additional material from your yard. Everything set at the curb must be storm-related debris.
– Do not place anything under low-hanging obstacles like trees or power lines. Avoid stacking debris near fire hydrants and mailboxes.
Debris such as concrete, lot clearing, household move-outs or reconstruction-project waste are not eligible for collection and will not be picked up by the county’s debris contractor. Freshly cut vegetative yard waste should not be added to storm debris piles.
Freshly cut horticultural waste will be collected by the regular hauler, not the county’s debris contractor. To ensure pickup from the regular hauler, place the yard waste in a bin or paper bag; loose yard waste should be tied and bundled — no more than 6 feet in length and 50 pounds or less.
Residents are responsible for restoring right-of-way in front of their properties to pre-Milton appearance, including laying sod if necessary.
