The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District reported that there is a potential to see some storm surge from Hurricane Milton. It is crucial for residents to make arrangements now for electric vehicles to keep them and their property safe in the event of storm surge.

Fire Marshal Chief Larry Williams offered the following tips:

– Know the risks: Electric vehicles, golf carts, scooters and bicycles propose additional hazards if exposed to saltwater, including the risk of battery fires.

– Plan ahead: Move your electric vehicle to higher ground if storm surge is expected.

– Charging precautions: If flooding is likely, unplug your vehicle from its charging station to prevent electrical hazards.

– Secure your vehicle: Ensure your EV is parked in a safe location away from potential water exposure.

– Stay informed: Monitor weather reports and follow local evacuation orders to prevent any damage to the vehicles or your property.

By taking the above steps and those provided by the Florida Division of Emergency Management, residents can help reduce the risk of fire and electrical dangers during severe weather.

“Your safety is our priority,” the district reported.
