City provides update on tropical storm

At about 11 a.m. today, Sept. 25, the city of Sanibel reported that it continues to closely monitor the weather conditions of Tropical Storm Helene.

Mayor Richard Johnson has declared a State of Local Emergency pertaining to the storm.

In response to forecasted weather conditions, city offices and the Sanibel Recreation Center will be closed on Sept. 26. The rec center will close early today, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m. Youth swim team practice is canceled. Parents of after-school care students should ensure children are picked up by 5 p.m.

Waste Management (WM) collection will be delayed on Sept. 26-27. Routes normally scheduled for Thursday will be picked up on Friday, and routes normally scheduled for Friday will be picked up on Saturday.

Residents, business owners and visitors should closely monitor the storm through the National Hurricane Center, National Weather Service and local weather stations as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. The public is encouraged to register with Alert Lee at https://alertlee.com/ to receive emergency notifications from Lee County and with the city at https://www.mysanibel.com/government/city-manager-s-office/useful-links/sign-up-for-city-announcements to receive city announcements.

Residents who feel that their homes may not be safe from the potential storm surge, winds and rain from Tropical Storm Helene should consider evacuating the island until the storm has passed the area.
