City reports on developing tropical system

On Aug. 1 at 9 p.m., the city of Sanibel reported that a tropical disturbance — Invest 97L — in the Caribbean Sea has the potential to strengthen to a tropical depression over the next 48 hours.
Its area of development has shifted west and is expected to track into the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
There is potential for heavy rain on Sanibel beginning this weekend and into next week.
Island residents, business owners and visitors should closely monitor the storm through the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service as it moves into the Gulf. The city also advised the public to consider registering with Alert Lee to receive emergency notifications from Lee County and with the city to receive the city’s announcements.
