WEATHER WATCH: Tornado watch issued, county monitoring system

The city of Sanibel reported that the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 15 counties in Florida, including Lee County, which will be in effect from now until 9 p.m.

Also, the city received the following from Lee County about the approaching weather system:

“The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Statement for Lee County. Residents in areas prone to coastal flooding such as St. James City, the Town of Fort Myers Beach and Downtown Fort Myers should monitor local media outlets and National Weather Service advisories from the Tampa Bay Area office at www.weather.gov/tbw.

“The National Weather Service forecast advises residents also should be aware of forecasted high winds and potential tornados. Residents should anticipate high surf and rip currents along the coast.

“Staff are in regular contact with partners at the National Weather Service and the Florida Division of Emergency Management. The Emergency Management team is ready to assist with any issues that arise this afternoon and overnight as the majority of anticipated severe weather moves through Lee County.

“Gov. Ron DeSantis’ recently issued executive order at this time is for counties such as Hillsborough and Pinellas and those north.”
