The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum on Sanibel is continuing with its annual lecture series, which is offered virtually via Zoom and free of charge. The next lecture in the series will be:

– Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m.: “Renewal: The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum One Year After Hurricane Ian” with Executive Director Sam Ankerson

It is not often that a museum is nearly wiped out. But that is what happened to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum with the landfall of Category 4 Hurricane Ian on Sanibel on Sept. 28. The months since have been a powerful blend of loss, emergency response, rallying, rebuilding and envisioning a renewed future for the museum.

Approaching the one-year anniversary of the storm, Ankerson will share about this journey and the state of the museum, will reflect on what makes the natural history museum unlike any other and will offer a view of the future of the museum following rebuilding.

He has served as executive director of the museum since 2021. Prior to that, Ankerson was deputy director of the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach and director of development at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont.

Advance registration is required.
