“Long Bright River” by Liz Moore

With support from the Sanibel Public Library Foundation, the Sanibel Public Library has launched a series of virtual author talks over the summer to include bestselling authors and thought leaders.

The next lecture will be held on Aug. 9 at 9 p.m. and will feature New York Times bestseller Liz Moore, author of “Long Bright River” and others.

A question-and-answer session with the author will follow.

Moore will discuss her international bestseller and other works. “Long Bright River” traces the story of two estranged sisters. Mickey is a cop, and Kacey lives on the Philadelphia streets in the vice of addiction. When Kacey disappears, Mickey panics over her sister’s safety — obsessed with finding the culprit and her sister before it’s too late. Drawing on deeply personal volunteer work, Moore’s novel puts a human face on the effect that addiction can have on generations of families and communities.

To register for the author talk, visit the Sanibel Public Library at www.sanlib.org and follow the link on the homepage. Once registered, participants will receive an emailed link to use to login for the lecture.

Those who need help registering can contact notices@sanlib.org or 239-472-2483.

The library provides a variety of programming for adults and children.

Visit its online calendar at www.sanlib.org for the most up-to-date information.

Families with children from babies to 12th-graders can register for the annual Summer Reading Program online with Beanstack at www.sanlib.org/children. It will run now through Aug. 6.

Over the past decade, children have read “for others” during the program. Participants earn books for their personal collection and for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Participating babies through sixth grade will earn books and more; teens can earn volunteer time when they read a book and write a book review, thus gaining service hours.

The Sanibel Public Library Foundation, along with the Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund, underwrites the program. The fund was established in 2008 to honor Cory, a library volunteer and supporter.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
