Bailey’s General Store on Sanibel is partnering with F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva to hold a milk donation drive to support local families in need from now through Aug. 30.

Donations are available in $5 increments at the store registers when customers check out.

“We know that the economic impact of inflation and COVID has caused increasing numbers of families to turn to F.I.S.H.’s food pantry for support,” Bailey’s owner Richard Johnson said. “One hundred percent of funds raised through our milk drive will be used to purchase milk at cost. We are proud to support F.I.S.H.’s efforts to provide food to families throughout the year.”

According to a Feeding America survey, 95 percent of food banks say they do not have enough milk available for families. One in six Americans experiences hunger — a number that increased to one in five during the pandemic. Hunger faces every community in the United States, including on Sanibel.

F.I.S.H.’s food pantry distributes food and grocery items, such as milk and other pantry staples.

“Milk is one of the top three requested perishable items at our food pantry. We want to ensure families don’t miss out on milk’s high-quality protein and the essential nutrients it provides,” President Maggi Feiner said. “We are pleased to partner with Bailey’s and have the opportunity to provide more fresh dairy to our clients in need. One of F.I.S.H.’s main four pillars is to ensure everyone has access to nutritious foods.”

Bailey’s General Store is at 2477 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
