Known as the unofficial end-of-season celebration for the islands, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s 9th annual Beer in the Bushes will return on April 16 from 6 to 10 p.m.

“Get your dancing moves ready. We’ve got three years of celebrating to do,” SCCF Events Manager Jeff Siwicke said. “Food trucks, craft beer, and the sounds of the Big Easy are coming soon.”

Headlining the outdoor festivities will be Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Known for a boisterous blend of funk, jazz, rock, and hip-hop — nothing short of seismic live “experiences,” and a whole lot of Southern charm — the group might very well be one of the Big Easy’s best kept secrets.

“Big Sam was lined up to play our 2020 event and is psyched to finally get to the island,” he said. “It’s sure to be a great way to let loose and enjoy some outdoor camaraderie.”

The event will feature craft beer tastings and great food, with Sanibel’s Catering by Leslie Adams coordinating the local food truck offerings to complement the beer tastings. Tickets will include $10 in TruxBux redeemable for dinner choices from any of the trucks. The event will also offer a chance to catch up with fellow islanders at the end of a very busy tourist season, according to Siwicke.

The funds raised will support the SCCF’s mission to protect and care for Southwest Florida’s coastal ecosystems. The SCCF family of non-profits includes the Sanibel Sea School and Coastal Watch.

Based in Wisconsin, Wimmer Communities will serve again as the presenting sponsor.

“Mark Wimmer reached out to us after attending Beer in the Bushes in 2018, explaining that his family’s connection to Sanibel dates back to the ’60s,” he said. “His immediate and extended family have much love for Sanibel and it happens when many of them are visiting.”

Additional event sponsors currently include the Jensen family and Todd and Leanne Marcum as band co-sponsors, and the Sanibel Captiva Community Bank as a food truck alley sponsor.
