Current Events to hold special panel with speakers

By SANIBEL CURRENT EVENTS 2 min read

Sanibel Current Events will present a special panel on “Political and Social Polarization: The Challenges to Democracy” on March 15 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. virtually via Zoom.

There is intensifying political and cultural polarization in America and worldwide. Partisan conflict in the United States seems to be sharper, more unrelenting and more ideological than at any time since the Civil War. What dangers does this pose for politics and society? Is democracy able to co-exist with this level of polarization? What strategies might help address the challenges for governance, communities and personal lives?

The guest speakers will be Janice Gross Stein and Porter Goss. Stein is a Canadian political scientist, author and scholar; specialist in Middle East studies, negotiation theory and international conflict management; and founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Goss is Sanibel’s first mayor; Republican member of Florida’s U.S. House of Representatives from 1988 to 2004; director of central intelligence from 2004-05; director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2005-06; and private consultant on international security since 2007.

The moderator will be Millard Everhart, former Fifth Judicial Circuit chief judge of the Cumberland County Circuit Court in Illinois. The session has been designed to be informative and interactive.

The deadline to register for free and request the Zoom login is March 11.
