Captiva library, county system offer programs
The Captiva Memorial Library, at 11560 Chapin Lane, Captiva, is offering the following free programming:
ADULT PROGRAMS
– Feb. 16: George Burns Performance at 4 p.m.
Entertainer George Burns is performed by actor Duffy Hudson, who brings stories of historical characters to life in a unique and memorable way. Burns was an American comedian, actor, singer and writer whose career successfully spanned radio, film and television. The cigar, the glasses, the wit and the kind grandfather-like image he projected in his later years all found a way into the hearts of many.
CHILDREN PROGRAMS
– Feb. 9-12: Celebrate Black History Month
(daily during operating hours)
Browse the Black History Month book display and complete activity sheets. Make a peace dove craft.
– Feb. 15-19: Love Your Library Cards
(daily during operating hours)
Enjoy books about love and kindness. Fun activity sheets to complete. Make a bouquet of hearts card for Valentine’s Day and Love Your Library Month.
– Feb. 22-26: Presidents Day
(daily during operating hours)
See the American President Book Display and complete activity sheets. Make a patriotic suncatcher craft.

ADULT PROGRAMS
– Feb. 9: Online Spanish Conversation Club at 6 p.m.
Are you ready to take your Spanish-speaking skills to the next level? Improve your fluency by chatting with adults. Practice speaking Spanish with others on a variety of topics, including current events and everyday situations. Intermediate to advanced Spanish-speaking skills are recommended in order to get the most out of the session. Presented by the School District of Lee County’s Adult & Career Education Program. Advance registration required before Feb. 9 at 6 p.m.
– Feb. 10: Online Germans to America, 400 Years of Immigration at 10 a.m.
Ken Weaver, leader of the German Roots Group of the Lee County Genealogical Society, will help the German-American researcher understand why their ancestors left Europe and what impact they had on American society. Using historical data, the focus will be on the locations from which the emigrants left and the places they settled in the United States. Advance registration required.
– Feb. 15: Online Genealogy, Submitting Lineage Society Applications at 10 a.m.
Do you want to join a lineage society, but do not know where to start? The seminar will cover the guidelines and optimum research strategies needed to meet the genealogical proof standards of evidence for a successful lineage society application. Advance registration required.
– Feb. 16: Online Writer’s Workshop at 2 p.m.
Practice writing prompts and share creative writing. Hone writing skills, listening skills, and how to give constructive criticism. Advance registration required.
– Feb. 16: Online English Cafe at 6 p.m.
The session provides adult learners an opportunity to practice speaking English with native speakers. Topics include everyday situations, current events and cultural areas. Presented by the School District of Lee County’s Adult & Career Education Program. Advance registration required before Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
– Feb. 21: Online Meditation Mondays at 11 a.m.
The guided program will provide visual instructions to help keep participants focused and meditating. Advance registration required.
