Captiva Holiday Art and Food Walk to feature crafters, artisans
The company that brings the seasonal farmers markets to Sanibel and Captiva, as well as others throughout Lee County, will hold its first art-centered event of the season for the islands this week.
Organized by Local Roots, co-owned by islanders Jean Baer and Betsy Ventura, the Captiva Holiday Art and Food Walk will be held on Dec. 31 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the entrance to the South Seas Island Resort. The event will feature an array of local crafters and artisans, along with their products.
It is the fourth season that they will host two of the art-centered events.
“We do it for the artists and crafters — we try to focus more on them,” Ventura said, adding that the events provide the participating vendors with another venue to sell their work to the community.
“The farmers market is more food oriented with a few crafts, while the art show is more art oriented with a few food vendors,” she said. “The art show we only have a couple of times a season, as compared to the weekly farmers market.”
Like the market, the art walk will be open to the public.
“There’ll be probably 30 vendors,” Ventura said.
Attendees will find watercolor artists and furniture painters, to jewelers and a candlemaker.
“We have handwoven towels, and we also have hats from Madagascar. We have handmade bags from Columbia,” she said. “And these are all made by the artists who will be on site.”
Some of the vendors will include A Work of Heart, Donna Elias Studios, Holi Cow, Linnell Line Jewelry, Lula, Madagascar Hats, Pepper Street Studio, Southern Conch Designs, and The Fouta Spa.
The event will also feature some food artisans and ready-to-eat food.
Ventura noted that there will be Mediterranean and Greek, barbecue and more.
Some vendors will include Daily Delice, Dream Earth Bowls, Dynasty Guacamole, Flying Eagle Kombucha, Molly Malone Seafood, My Exotic Fruit, Painted Lady Desserts, The Licorice Guy, and Twila Mae’s Chicken Salad.
The event is pet-friendly, so owners are welcome to bring them.
Limited parking is available on site.
“We encourage people to ride a golf cart, walk or bike if they are in the area,” she said.
The public is invited to stop by and check it out.
“To be able to support buying locally and being able to buy a one-of-a-kind gift that’s not mass produced,” Ventura said. “You’re buying directly from the person who’s actually making it.”
The second Captiva Holiday Art and Food Walk will be held on April 15.
The Captiva Island Farmers Market takes place on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the resort.
