The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District reported that on Nov. 18, its firefighters responded to a boat fire along Fort Myers Beach. Upon arrival, crews witnessed heavy smoke coming from the engine compartment. The U.S. Coast Guard towed the boat to Bowditch Beach and firefighters boarded the vessel and quickly extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported. The district reported that Sanibel was one of several agencies to respond and provide assistance. It added that fires occurring on boats can spread quickly and have unique challenges due to hazardous conditions and limited access.
