Lions hold annual Feather Bingo, honor former Lion
The Sanibel Captiva Lions Club recently held its annual Feather Bingo.
The event is celebrated in November with a meal of turkey and all the fixings, fellowship and bingo games. In the past, it was open to the community and served as a fundraiser for charities supported by the club. For safety reasons due to the pandemic, this event was limited to members and their guests.
The evening opened with a video about the Trailways Camps and Benjamin Miller. One charity supported by the club, it is a camp for adults with special needs that was created by Miller’s parents, Sharon and Jerry. The couple’s older son, Robert, and Miller were adults with special needs. The Millers recognized the lack of social interaction opportunities for adults with special needs and lack of respite time periods for parents and caregivers. After Miller passed away, they decided there needed to be a place where these adults could take part in “normal” camp activities, like fishing, canoeing and building bird houses, while their parents could have a respite time.
Jerry Miller has been a long-time Lion, as was Benjamin Miller. When Miller passed away, the club helped to create and support a video about the Trailways Camps and to honor his role as a Lion.
After the turkey dinner, prepared by Lori Schulz and her band of “pixies,” attendees played bingo. The club noted that it retired the old bingo machine, replacing it with a computerized one on a big screen.
