The community has an opportunity to help locals in need have a happy holiday this month.

The 14th Annual Original Turkey Drop and Roll will be held on Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon outside of the home of Bob Fodor and Laurie Jensen at 1417 Jamaica Drive, Sanibel.

“It’s something that we started up about 14 years ago,” Jensen explained. “It’s a really nice time, and it gives people an opportunity to give back — people want to give, but they don’t know what to do.”

Participants can drop off turkeys that will go to The Salvation Army.

“Frozen turkeys work great,” she said. “Any size is perfect.”

Over the last 13 years, the drive has resulted in the collection of 1,283 turkeys, totaling over 21,300 pounds. Last year, $2,800 in donations were also received that purchased 280 20-pound turkeys.

Jensen noted that people are again welcome to drop off a cash or check donation.

“That way people can go to the store or not go to the store,” she said.

Checks should be made out to The Salvation Army.

When participants drop off their donation, the couple will come out and collect the items.

“We’ll just run out to the car,” Jensen said, adding that those who want to socialize will have the opportunity to do so as usual. “In years past, people have gotten out of the car and chatted.”

In addition to turkeys, participants could also donate another item.

“Last year, when we went down there, they did mention one thing that they really need,” she said of trip to The Salvation Army to drop off the donations. “Socks. They’re always looking for socks.”

“So if you want to bring socks, we’d be happy to bring those down there too,” Jensen said.

Those unable to make it out to the event can still participate by calling 239-395-9411 or 239-841-0346 and arranging for a pick-up time. People can also mail check donations to the Jamaica Drive address.

“We’d be happy to come out and pick up a turkey or a check,” she said.

The community is encouraged to stop by and donate.

“People are really hurting. There’s a lot of people in need,” Jensen said. “It’s an opportunity to give something back to your community and other people in Fort Myers and the surrounding areas.”

“It’s always a lot of fun,” she added. “And it’s easy.”
