Islander, CEPD commissioner passes at age 91

A long-time island resident and sitting Captiva Erosion Control District commissioner has died.

Henry A. Kaiser, 91, of Captiva, passed away on Oct. 23, according to his family.

Kaiser and his wife, Carolyn, bought a house on the island in 1980. They became full-time residents in 1996, when he retired from the Times Mirror Corporation and several of its magazine publications.

Dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the island, Kaiser served as a CEPD commissioner from 2008 up to his passing. He was instrumental in enacting the beach renourishment program.

Prior to retiring, Kaiser guided Skiing Magazine from 1969-96. Though five different ownerships of the publication, his term included president of the Times Mirror Corporation from 1985-96 as publisher of Ski Magazine, Skiing Magazine and Trans Word Snowboarding Magazine, plus trade publications.

From 1982-85, Kaiser served as publisher and vice president of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He was publisher and vice president of Skiing Magazine and Skiing Trade News from 1964-82.

A fundraiser for the U.S. Ski Team and chairman of its New York committee, Kaiser was honored for his commitment to the industry. He was inducted into the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2015.

Kaiser served the U.S. military from 1954-56.

From 1985 up to his passing, he was an active member of the Atlantic Beach Club in Long Island, New York. Kaiser served on the board and as president, as well as president of the ABC Land Company.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; children, Hank, Carolyn, Lorrie, Cindy and Catherine; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
