The Sandpiper Press announced that “Captivated, The Art of Ikki Matsumoto” recently received the 2021 Mary Ellen LoPresti Art Publication Award from the Southeast Chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America.

“This is a pretty special award, given by art book lovers and professionals to a select group of art publications over the past 37 years,” author and publisher Steve Saari said. “Obviously, we are thrilled and humbled to have been chosen this year. But we see it as further proof of the power — and joy — of Ikki’s work.”

“Captivated” is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary island artist, whose whimsical and iconic work was inspired by the abundant wildlife of Sanibel and Captiva. The 156-page work encompasses a broad range of Matsumoto’s artwork, along with candid family photos and mementos from the artist’s nearly 40 years working in the region.

The Art Libraries Society of North America is an international professional organization devoted to art librarianship. The regional chapter established the LoPresti Publication Award Competition in 1985 to recognize and encourage excellence in art publications issued in the southeastern U.S. They named for LoPresti, who was the design librarian at the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library at North Carolina State University, until her death in 1985. The winners are kept in the chapter’s archives at Duke University.
