F.I.S.H. implements ‘Home for the Holidays’ for seniors

As part of its holiday programming, F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva has added an enhanced element called “Home for the Holidays” specifically for the islands’ senior population. It will provide a personalized gift in the December holiday-themed F.I.S.H. Smile Box that each participate specifically requested, such as a heated blanket, robe, new doggie dish for furry friends or plants.
“Over the years, we’ve noticed that our older population begins to feel more isolated and unhappy this time of year,” Assistant Executive Director Maria Espinoza said. “Because of the COVID pandemic, many have not seen their family or loved ones for over one year and still have mixed emotions about making holiday plans for this season.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “socially isolated older adults are at higher risk for depression. The focus on family, friends and togetherness during this time of year can actually bring melancholy feelings to the forefront for many elders.”
“We want to offer something special to show support and care of our older neighbors,” Espinoza said. “By adding the Home for the Holidays element to the already existing Smile Box, we hope to lift the spirits of our seniors as we celebrate the holiday season in a safe and healthy way.”
The Sanibel-Captiva Islands Association of Realtors will hold a Merry F.I.S.H.MAS event on Dec. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Blue Giraffe 2, at 1100 Par View Drive, Sanibel. Items for seniors can be dropped off, along with items for children and teens. Those who cannot attend can drop off or have items delivered to the SCIAR office, at 2353 Periwinkle Way, Suite 201, Sanibel.
F.I.S.H. thanked the SCIAR and event sponsors, including American Momentum Bank, Coastal Title Services of SW Florida, Heidrick & Co. Insurance, Florida’s Lake Michigan Credit Union, Margaret Wilcox, Rosier Insurance, Sanibel Captiva Community Bank and Superior Title Services.
To fulfill a specific senior gift request, contact F.I.S.H. at 239-472-4775.
F.I.S.H. volunteers will sort, wrap and deliver the gifts and Smile Boxes to neighbors just before the Christmas holiday. The volunteers working on the program will follow strict COVID-19 safety measures that include wearing masks, social distancing and frequent use of hand sanitizer.
