Sanibel police: Still in active part of hurricane season

The Sanibel Police Department reminded the public that the hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin (Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico) is June 1 to Nov. 30.
– Hurricane Reentry Pass: Our reentry pass easily identifies who and when persons are authorized to return after an evacuation. To obtain a pass, complete the application and attach the required documentation. The passes are issued all year-long: do not wait until a storm threatens to get one. They are issued at the Sanibel police. For more information, visit mysanibel.com/emergency-management.
– Family Emergency Plan: Completing this pre-formatted plan makes it for your family to have the necessary items in case of an emergency. The plan is on the county’s website at leeeoc.com.
– Special Needs Program: Provides shelter from a tropical system for those who live in a home that is not safe from storm surge or wind, and who have no other safe place to go. Transportation to a shelter can be arranged if needed. The program is available to Lee County residents at no cost, but you must pre-register every year. Registration is suspended when the county enters the five-day forecast cone of a storm. To register, contact F.I.S.H of Sanibel-Captive at 239-472-4775, or you can register directly with the county at leeeoc.com.
– Lee County All Hazards Guide: A resource on a variety of topics like preparations, shelters, emergency contacts and more. View it at leeeoc.com or get a hard copy at the following locations: Sanibel Recreation Center, Sanibel Public Library, The Community House and City Hall.
– Flood Hazards: The Federal Emergency Management Agency lists the entire city as a Special Flood Hazard Area. Floods kill almost 200 people a year in the United States — 50 percent of those are vehicle related. Remember: Turn Around — Don’t Drown!
– Local Mitigation Strategy Feedback Survey: The Local Mitigation Strategy Planning Survey is an opportunity to provide input on the planning document that is updated every five years. Visit https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/2e41731c224047e3a0a5d16d98c9d290. Select your location as “City of Sanibel.” For “How did you hear about the survey,” select “Other” and enter “Sanibel Press Release.” You can then give your feedback on the Local Mitigation Strategy Plan. All surveys and information are sent to the Lee County Emergency Operations Center for analysis.
