Sanibel library recognizes literacy month

For the past decade, National Information Literacy Awareness Month has been celebrated in October.

According to the American Library Association, “Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate and effectively use information.” In study after study, libraries are ranked among the public’s most trusted sources of information.

Besides books and printed materials, the Sanibel Public Library offers digital collections including local, national and international newspapers, plus DVDs and streaming video for education and leisure. It offers daily and weekly newspapers for patrons to read inside the library, like the Reporter-Islander, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and News-Press.

Library card holders can also keep up-to-date on current events from home with PressReader. Used via computer or app, it offers online access to U.S. newspapers, plus publications from around the globe. Its accessibility mode — with navigation, audio, tab navigation, color contrast, large named buttons, and larger font size — can convert digital newspaper text into speech read aloud. From the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun, to the NY Post, La Prensa and Sun-Sentinel, patrons can get news from a variety of sources.

To read news magazines in print like Barron’s, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Economist, Foreign Affairs or Scientific American, stop by the library to read current issues. Library card holders can also borrow past issues to take home. In addition, the SPL offers Investor’s Business Weekly, Value Line, Washington Examiner, News China, ARTnews and Christian Science Monitor.

Magazines like The Economist, Newsweek, Harper’s and Money are available to download via the Libby app. The library offers an extensive online collection that available 24/7. Thousands of eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, movies and more can be accessed at any time through the library’s eShelf.

Be in-the-know with PBS “Frontline” investigative documentary series on Kanopy streaming service. Patrons can watch up to 10 films or television episodes each month using their library card.

October is also Cybersecurity Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and ensure the public has the resources it needs to be safer and more secure online. In addition to borrowing books like “Cybersecurity for Dummies,” patrons can learn about protecting their data and devices from Consumer Reports. Stop by the SPL to access Consumer Reports online to read news articles about cybersecurity and to search CR buying guide information. Library card holders can also borrow Consumer Reports magazine in print. For help using reference services, including Morningstar, Ancestry.com or Consumer Reports, call 239-472-2483 to set up an appointment.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open: Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
