Refuge welcomes new WoW education volunteers

Don and Jane Harvey recently joined the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge’s Wildlife on Wheels Education Team for the coming season as resident volunteers.
Jane Harvey previously worked as a sixth-grade teacher in language art and social studies while completing a master’s and media specialist degree at the University of Georgia. She retired in 2002 with 30 years in the educational field. Don Harvey, who worked as a power plant inspector and, later, a supervisor for the Tennessee Valley Authority, retired in 2016 from his own consulting business.
The couple, who call Chattanooga, Tennessee, their home base, volunteered as roadside assistants in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park before migrating to the Sanibel refuge. Other volunteer gigs across the country have included Denali, Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Acadia national parks.
“When we saw the ad for ‘Ding,’ it appeared to be written for us,” Don Harvey said. “The ad specified someone that was an educator and someone with a Class A CDL driver’s license. Jane would be the educator and I would be the driver.”
