Sanibel library loaning bird kits to children

The Sanibel Public Library is now loaning birdwatching kits for children.
The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society donated child-sized binoculars for the two kits. SCAS President Phyllis Gresham and Bette Harig presented the binoculars to Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans.
“The entire board of Audubon supports birding initiatives and we hope families will join us on our birding walks, Saturdays, starting in January,” Gresham said.
Library cardholders now borrow the Children’s Birding Kit with binoculars, birdwatching books and laminated guides, and other tools to help kids enjoy birdwatching. They include a copy of “The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America,” which is loaded with color photographs, drawings showing typical behaviors, range maps, an easy-to-use checklist, fun facts, information about each bird, its vocalizations, and its habitat. The guidebooks were donated to the library by Bird Watcher’s Digest.
The library loans four Birdwatching Kits for adults, which are also circulated in backpacks. Staff also worked with the SCAS and local birdwatching guide Ken Burgener to select the contents of the kits. Loaning non-traditional items is another way the library helps the community access information and enjoy new experiences. The initiatives add to the SPL’s “Library of Things,” where patrons can borrow items like cooking kits, GoPro videocamera, LEGO Architecture kits, videogames or WiFi hotspots.
During September, the library is participating in an educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11, its origin, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World” includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the permanent collection of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
Library staff have selected material for further reading in a book display near the posters.
In addition, stop by the library during September to see 25 artworks from the Sanibel-Captiva Art League’s exhibit, called “Home Sweet Home.”
