The Sanibel Public Library is participating in the “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World” exhibit that presents the history of 9/11 and its ongoing implications through the stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks.

Told across 14 posters, the exhibition includes archival photographs from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s collection. It explores the consequences of terrorism at the local, national and international levels and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11.

Library staff have selected material for further reading in a book display near the posters.

The exhibit’s theme is that the events of 9/11 remind the public that it may never be able to prevent all the actions of people intent on harming others, but it does have control over how it responds to such events. Whether by volunteering in the community, serving in the military, caring for the sick or through other efforts, all can help build the world in which we want to live. As we witness history unfolding in our own time, the ways we choose to respond — large and small — can demonstrate the best of human nature after even the worst of days.

“During this 20th anniversary year, it is our privilege to share these lessons with a new generation, teach them about the ongoing repercussions of the 9/11 attacks and inspire them with the idea that, even in the darkest of times, we can come together, support one another and find the strength to renew and rebuild,” museum President and Chief Executive Officer Alice M. Greenwald said.

In addition, stop by the library during September to see 25 artworks from the Sanibel-Captiva Art League’s exhibit, called “Home Sweet Home.”

It continues to offer contact-less curbside service. Put items on hold online or make requests by calling 239-472-2483. You will be notified when your items are ready for pickup. Patrons will have three days, excluding Saturday and Sunday, to pick up the items. Hours are Monday to Friday from noon to 3 p.m.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open: Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
