Sanibel library summer program breaks record
Children read “for others” in the Sanibel Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Program.
They earned books for their personal collection based on the hours they read and from completing challenges, plus books for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
“I am, as always, proud of all of our readers, but am especially thrilled for those who find a love of books because of summer reading,” Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans said.
This summer had the most participants than any previous year. This year’s theme, “Tails and Tales,” featured online storytimes with Evans and virtual programming from Page Turner Adventures.
The library reported that 328 participants earned books for themselves and 1,149 books for the children’s hospital. They logged 133,288 minutes of reading, which equaled about 2,222 hours. Since the program’s inception in 2012, participants have helped to contribute more than 12,000 books to the hospital. New books are needed every year because books are given to patients to take home.
The Sanibel Public Library Foundation, along with the Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund, underwrites the program. The fund was established in 2008 to honor Cory, a library volunteer and supporter.
“The Summer Reading Program has grown to become more popular every year. We are especially appreciative to the library foundation and the Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund,” Executive Director Margaret Mohundro said. “I think the program highlights the generous spirit of the islands.”
The foundation provides, supports and supplements library services and assists in the promotion of reading and literacy. Since 2006, it has provided over $1 million in grant funding to support the Library Author Series; Summer Reading Program; TeenSpace Room; technology initiatives, including cutting-edge computer hardware and software; early literacy computers; eBooks; mobile apps; and more.
