Sanibel library features reading program, exhibit
The Sanibel Public Library invites families to register youths for its Summer Reading Program.
Officials reported that over 250 participants from babies to teens have already signed up and logged 7,318 minutes of reading. This year’s theme is “Tails and Tales,” with a special focus on animals.
All youths up to age 18 are invited to register. Participants will receive a special gift.
Summer programming is available online and Take and Make activities are available to pick up. The library is offering “browse inside” or contact-less curbside service for those families who want to check out books for summer reading. Residents and visitors are invited to sign up for the summer program.
The library is also hosting online programs from Page Turner Adventures through July 16.
Instead of paper logs for tracking reading and activities, the library offers Beanstack. It is a free, user-friendly app for PCs and Apple and Android devices. Sign up from a smartphone or computer at https://sanlib.beanstack.org/reader365, or call the library for help. Summer program participants can pick up their registration gift and any books earned at the library. Adult readers can also use Beanstack.
As in years past, participants can read to earn books for their home library and for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book “earned” with a book for patients at the hospital. The summer program is funded in part by a grant from the foundation’s Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund. The fund was established in 2008 to honor longtime library volunteer and supporter Joan Hunt Cory, who was a 20-year Sanibel resident.
Also this summer, Sanibel Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans will post her Baby Bounce Time videos and storytime videos to the Children’s Page at sanlib.org/children.
From July through September, stop by to see 25 artworks from the Sanibel-Captiva Art League’s exhibit, called “Home Sweet Home.”
The library is seeking stories, photos and videos of people and places on Sanibel and Captiva for its digital archives, available at www.sanlib.org. It is also looking for help to identify names and places in the photograph collection. With over 2,000 items, the archives is a peek into the islands’ past. Seed development for the project is supported in part by the Roni Jo Freer Fund of the library foundation.
Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.
Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.
The Sanibel Public Library is open: Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
