County library system providing virtual programming

The Lee County Library System, which includes the Captiva Memorial Library, is offering the following free virtual programming for all ages:

ADULT PROGRAMS

– July 22: Virtual Craft Club for Adults at 2 p.m.

Calling all crafters! Join us for a live virtual craft club for adults where we will take turns sharing our latest crafty creations. Knitters, painters and crafters of all types welcome. Advance registration required before July 22 at 2 p.m.

TEEN PROGRAMS

– July 20: Amazing Aussies at 1 p.m.

Meet Cassidy Jagger with Roos2U and some amazing animals from the Land Down Under. During the live presentation, Jagger will take participants on a “walk about,” where they will be introduced to red kangaroos, swamp wallabies, agile wallabies, bennetts wallabies, emus and all their crazy antics. After the walk about, learn how to make an origami kangaroo out of paper. Grab and Go Teen Activity kits with supplies for the origami craft are available at all libraries beginning July 17, while supplies last.

CHILDREN PROGRAMS

– July 14: Meet the Author

Pat Cummings is the recipient of the Coretta Scott King and the Boston Globe-Horn Book awards. She will share her latest book, “Where is Mommy?” Participants will also meet a celebrity spider in “Ananse and the Lizard” and they will have a special read-aloud of “Harvey Moon, Museum Boy.”

– July 15: “Harvey Moon, Museum Boy”

Pat Cummings will read her book “Harvey Moon, Museum Boy.” To liven up his class trip, Harvey Moon brings his pet lizard, Zippy, along to the museum. Whoops! When Zippy escapes, Harvey’s adventures begin. Participants will be laughing and wondering what’s next as knights, dinosaurs and even mummies get into the act.

– July 16: Puppy Pals — Comedy Dog Show

Wesley Williams has been on “America’s Got Talent” and “Britain’s Got Talent” and now he is here with an excerpt from his hilarious Puppy Pals show, featuring cute canines creating controlled chaos.

– July 19: The Sofa Safari Game Show

What animal eats upside down? How many hearts does an octopus have? Can you hop as high as a kangaroo? These questions and more will be answered during Sofa Safari, the interactive game show that takes participants on a safari without leaving the sofa.

– July 20: Jungle Safari Flashlight Craft

A zip lock bag, black and white construction paper, and permanent markers are all that are needed to make this project that is part craft and part optical illusion. Grab and Go Activity Kits with supplies for the craft are available at all library locations beginning July 19, while supplies last.

– July 21: Meet the Illustrator

Illustrator David DePasquale will share his debut picture book, “A Wisdom of Wombats,” and invites participants to explore the wonderful words used to describe groups of animals. He is also the lead character designer on “Arlo the Alligator Boy,” a new Netflix movie. DePasquale will offer some tips and tricks for future illustrators and animators.

– July 22: Meet Jim Hammond

Get ready for a roaring good time when puppet master Jim Hammond shares some backstage stories from “The Lion King” stage production and teaches participants how to be puppeteers.

– July 23: Meet Teachers of Nature

Every animal needs a superpower to survive. Cheetahs have speed, chameleons have camouflage and birds have flight. Meet real live animal superheroes in this “wild” program.

– July 26: The Smallest Show on Earth

Felix the Flea wants to join a flea circus. But when his emotions get the best of him, Page and Kenny decide to put on an actual circus to show him the ropes. They are joined by some special guests, including a real jumping spider, owner and star of Circus Kirkus and Jonathan Lee Iverson, Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey’s last ringmaster.

– July 27: Climbing Spider Craft

Grab some popsicle sticks, masking tape and yarn to create a spider that can climb up any water spout. Grab and Go Activity Kits with supplies for the craft are available at all library locations beginning July 26, while supplies last.

BIRTH TO PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS

– July 14: Storytime Anytime!

Enjoy storytime at home or on the go with Storytime Anytime! This is a condensed version of the in-person storytimes and includes a variety of songs, stories, rhymes and caregiver tips designed to promote and reinforce early literacy and language development.

The Captiva Memorial Library is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It offers curbside hold pick up on Tuesday through Saturday.
