BIG ARTS will host a fine arts reception and artist talk to celebrate its current exhibit, titled “Fast Forward,” which features the work of alumni from Florida SouthWestern State College.

The reception will take place on July 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Dunham Family Gallery, with complimentary wine and other beverages available. The talk will begin at 5:30 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to have a reception and artist talk back at BIG ARTS,” Program and Gallery Manager Lauren Huff said. “It’s really exciting to host these seven, young up-and-coming artists. This has been a really fantastic exhibit, and we’re really looking forward to having all the artists here to discuss their work.”

On display until July 31, the exhibit features Martha De la Cruz, Dalton Howard, Alejandro Gómez Hernandez, Claire Malécot, Leila Mesdaghi, Kirsten Pettifor and B.A. Wikoff.

“Fast Forward” is a multi-media exhibition in which the artists imagine the future from the vantage point of this historically turbulent and uncertain time. The work ranges from pieces as personal as sewing together one’s cultural and familiar heritage, to work that explores the wider world and interrogates colonialism and income inequality. One piece offers solutions to competitive occupations through an alternative game of chess where players work collaboratively to turn pawns into queens.

The public can view the exhibition in-person Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call the box office at 239-395-0900 or visit bigarts.org.

A high-definition virtual gallery walk-through is available at bigarts.org.

BIG ARTS is at 900 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.
