The Southwest Florida Symphony recently welcomed Emer Olivarez to its administrative team as the grants and communications manager.

She will undertake grant writing and research opportunities and further broadcast the symphony’s voice on social media and beyond to facilitate growth and expand the orchestra’s reach.

Olivarez has played the violin for 20 years and grew up playing and teaching in Southwest Florida. In addition to her new role at the symphony, she instructs violin at Educator’s Music in Cape Coral.

Olivarez attended New York University, originally pursuing a degree in music education. She won scholarships accruing to $35,000 a year, including the Strings Magazine Edith Eisler Scholarship. Olivarez graduated with a Bachelor of Science in media, culture and communications, with a minor in Spanish.

She began playing the violin in first grade at North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts and studied for years with Mitsue Schmidt, using the Suzuki Method. Olivarez began teaching while still in high school and was invited to join a community orchestra, where she was the youngest member at the time.
