The Children’s Education Center of the Islands recently partnered with the Sanibel Sea School.

With CECI’s educators and a handful of parent volunteers present, the students ventured to Algiers beach from their school’s campus. There they met the Sanibel Sea School staff, who had four engaging stations set up for each class to explore, investigate and learn more about their backyard: the beach.

The first station was “Subtidal Creature Feature.” There were portable tanks with fish, sand dollars and other creatures to discover. Children used small seine and dip nets to investigate the waters further.

The second station was called the “Swash Zone.” The students has the opportunity to explore the area of the beach where the waves meet the sand. They sieved for coquinas, mole crabs and more.

At the “Shells” station, they children explored for bivalve and gastropod shells and learned about the creatures that made them.

The final station was “Sea Turtles.” The students learned about nesting as the islands are currently in season. There was even a nest close by for them to observe. They also created their own turtle nest.
