Sanibel library offers Take and Make activities
The Sanibel Public Library is offering Take and Make activities for its Summer Reading Program.
This year’s theme is “Tails and Tales,” with a special focus on animals. All children, from babies to age 18, are invited to sign up. Participants of the program will receive a special gift; quantities are limited.
The library is hosting online programming from Page Turner Adventures, with comedy, theater shows, recipes, author interviews, guest performers, contests and games. Page Turner Adventures’ “Challenge” is also available. The Animal Adventures Summer Reading Program is based on storyologist Page Turner and Kenny, her slap-stick sidekick. Together, they transform children into storyologists and send them on comic quests to collect, tell and write stories. Participants will journey through the “Once Upon a Time Machine” for virtual adventures based on themes such as farmyard friends, fish tales, pet pals and celebrity critters. Each theme includes shows, virtual field trips, and arts and crafts projects.
Instead of paper logs for tracking reading and activities, the library offers Beanstack. It is a free, user-friendly app for PCs and Apple and Android devices. Sign up from a smartphone or computer at https://sanlib.beanstack.org/reader365, or call the library for help. Summer program participants can pick up their registration gift and any books earned at the library. Adult readers can also use Beanstack.
As in years past, participants can read to earn books for their home library and for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book “earned” with a book for patients at the hospital. The summer program is funded in part by a grant from the foundation’s Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund. The fund was established in 2008 to honor longtime library volunteer and supporter Joan Hunt Cory, who was a 20-year Sanibel resident.
Also this summer, Sanibel Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans will post her Baby Bounce Time videos and storytime videos to the Children’s Page at sanlib.org/children.
In addition, a “pop up” dollar-per-bag book sale will start on July 6 at the library.
It continues to offer contact-less curbside service. Put items on hold online or make requests by calling 239-472-2483. You will be notified when your items are ready for pickup. Patrons will have three days, excluding Saturday and Sunday, to pick up the items. Hours are Monday to Friday from noon to 3 p.m.
Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.
Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.
The Sanibel Public Library is open: Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The library will be closed on July 5 in observance of Independence Day.
