Marine education offered in ASL

The Sanibel Sea School recently participated in a Lunch and Learn with The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center in Fort Myers. Staff learned some important signs in American Sign Language, as well as some ocean-inspired signs related to its class offerings.
Officials reported that the Sanibel Sea School strives to make its programs more accessible for all, including the deaf and hard of hearing community, so that everyone can experience an ocean education. All of its programs are very hands-on and tactile, and now its staff can incorporate ASL into them.
One marine science educator, Brianna Machuga, has a special passion for ASL. Machuga actually studied ASL for two years at the college level and is comfortable communicating in basic ASL.
The deaf and hard of hearing who are interested in attending one of the programs at the Sanibel Sea School can set up a session with Machuga. For more information, contact info@sanibelseaschool.org.
