Summer school to provide enhanced learning opportunities
The School District of Lee County announced an enhanced summer school program with several opportunities for learning, enrichment and engagement. Registration is available for classes between June 28 and July 22.
“We hope to have as many as 25,000 students take part in summer school this year,” Director of Teaching and Learning for High School Curriculum Candace Allevato said. “We know some of our students may need additional support because of COVID-19’s impact on education, and some of the programs we are offering are designed to fill those gaps. We encourage our families to talk with their child’s school about what program is best for their child.”
The largest opportunity available to all kindergarten through 8th grade students is the Expanded Virtual Learning Summer Program. Students who enroll will keep their district issued Chromebook through the summer to access the iReady program for lessons in math and reading. Families have already been sent a survey about their interest in the program and are encouraged to reply soon.
Elementary school students have the opportunity for individualized enrichment in math and reading, a STEM camp, ELL Science Camp and more. Middle school students can get individualized help, credit recovery, STEM camp and more. High school students have access to credit recovery, Algebra and Geometry Camps, the ability to earn 1/2 credit in several classes and more. Interested families and students should speak to their school for information about the classes offered and how to register.
Some classes meet in person, some are virtual and some are online with the opportunity to engage and interact with the teacher. For in-person learning, face masks will be voluntary.
