The Tarpon Bay Recreation area’s boat ramp will be closed to motorized launches starting June 1.

The parking lot is currently being renovated and, as a result, access to the ramp will be temporarily prohibited until that section of the project is complete, according to the Tarpon Bay Explorers.

“The next phase of the project entails laying concrete for ADA accessibility and to create a more accessible path to the facility,” J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge Manager and Southwest Florida Refuge Complex Project Leader Kevin Godsea said.

Non-motorized vessels, such as kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards, will still be allowed to launch from Tarpon Bay’s beach area.

The estimated completion date is June 15.

TBE will remain open while the parking lot undergoes the improvements.

“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this time of transition,” Godsea said. “We are hoping to complete this phase as soon as possible so there will be no limitations to the public or our concession partner, Tarpon Bay Explorers.”

Concession to the refuge, TBE provides guided tours and recreational activities within the refuge. For more information, contact the gift shop at 239-472-8900 or visit www.tarponbayexplorers.com.
