American Legion Post 123 recently hosted the Southwest Florida chapter of Heroes on the Water, following the nonprofit’s paddling visit to the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge.

An organization dedicated to healing veterans and first responders, the local chapter organized a paddling trip at the refuge as part of its “Paddle. Fish. Heal.” program. Led by chapter Coordinator Timothy Zimmerman, the group enjoyed several hours on the water before heading to the legion.

Post 123 provided burgers, bratwursts, sodas and water for the thirsty and hungry. The back patio provided the perfect setting for exchanging stories and relaxing in the shade, officials reported.

The all-volunteer team included organizer and First Vice Commander Randy Carson, Service Officer Bob Booth, Auxiliary member and Food and Beverage Manager Becky Skog, Sons of the Legion member and bartender Cecil Miller, Auxiliary member and bartender Brandi Skog, Auxiliary member Cheryl Kinder, and Sons of the Legion member and Sanibel Fire Commissioner Richard McCurry.

At 4929 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel, Post 123 is open to all veterans and the public.

It is always looking for veterans to join and participate. For more information, call 239-472 9979.
