Sanibel library marks National Library Week
During the first week of April, the Sanibel Public Library joined libraries nationwide to celebrate National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and staff.
In recognition of the week, the Sanibel Public Library Foundation created six “swag bags,” which were given to library patrons who were chosen at random. Officials reported that the bags contained a few gifts, including a Kindle Fire that can be loaded with library apps to read eBooks.
This year’s theme, “Welcome to Your Library,” promoted the idea that libraries extend beyond the walls of a building — that everyone is welcome to use library services. Libraries across the country have added services in response to the pandemic. In the past year, the Sanibel library has added curbside pickup, Brainfuse — an online tutoring service — and more eBooks. It also loans mobile WiFi hotspots to provide access to the Internet to help bridge the digital divide.
Locals and visitors can attend World War II history programs with staffer Duane E. Shaffer via Zoom. He will present programs via Zoom on April 30 and May 14 and 28. More details and login instructions are at www.sanlib.org. In addition, replays of Shaffer’s recent past programs can be watched online.
The library has 2020 IRS Form 1040/1040 SR and its instruction booklet. The forms are available in limited supply. All other tax forms can be printed from the IRS Website at irs.gov. Those who need help printing forms can ask library staff for assistance. A library card is not required to use the printers.
During the month of April, stop by the library to see landscape and seascape acrylic paintings by Sanibel-Captiva Art League member Jim Storer on display.
Youth Services Librarian Deanna Evans posts online storytimes each week. To share in her virtual storytimes, songs and smiles, check out the library’s Children’s Page at sanlib.org/children.
The library continues to offer contact-less curbside service. To use the service, put items on hold online or make requests by calling 239-472-2483. You will be notified when your items are ready for pickup. Patrons have three days, excluding Saturday and Sunday, to pick up items. Hours are Monday to Friday from noon to 3 p.m.
Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.
Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.
The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays.
