F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva reported that food is one of the most basic survival needs, yet there is a significant portion of the island community who struggle to put food on the table.

The human services organization works daily to reduce that number by providing assistance through its food programs, thanks to donors, volunteers, community partners and staff. It offers supplemental groceries five days a week with its “choice” food pantry, which allows clients to shop according to their life schedules that may otherwise prevent them from getting the resources they need.

The pantry is open to all Lee County residents.

As season ends and snowbird neighbors begin to leave, F.I.S.H. experiences an increase in food pantry usage due, in part, to a reduction in hours for employees working on Sanibel and Captiva. It uses various sources to maximize the pantry budget to keep the necessities in stock, but F.I.S.H. can always use help from the community.

The pantry is currently in need of the following items:

– Canned tuna, chicken, vegetables and soups

– Fruits and fruit juices

– Pork and beans

– Packaged pasta

– Pinto and other beans

– Rice

– Macaroni and cheese

– Hot and cold cereals

Food donations, including perishables, are accepted Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Walk-in Center, at 2430 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Please do not donate opened nor expired food.

Additional drop-off sites are Bailey’s General Store, Bank of the Islands and South Seas Main Gate.
