Director of music to retire at SSCUCC

Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ’s Music Committee reported that after serving 20 years as the music director for the church, Dr. Elwood Smith is planning to retire in June.
A celebration reception of him and his time and achievements will take place on April 25 at 10 a.m. in the courtyard. Congregants, friends and others who know and appreciate Smith are invited to attend.
From his earliest experiences attending concerts in Ohio, his life has been steeped in music. A degree at the Eastman School of Music in New York jump started a career that included teaching for 30 years at Northern Illinois University. Smith has conducted and directed choral groups, bands, musicals and operas. His travels are always centered around the operas and other concerts he can hear in each locale.
As the SCUCC’s music director, Smith plans for and directs the choir during the season, hires section leaders and soloists, works with the church’s other musicians and plays the piano for special pieces and at services. He has been instrumental in arranging for outside groups to present concerts at the church.
