On March 23, the islands’ elderly population and those who have been homebound or unable to get a vaccination appointment were able to get their shots. Thanks to the hard work of F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva, working with its community partners, Johnson & Johnson vaccinations were made available at The Community House on Sanibel. Event support was provided by F.I.S.H. volunteers, TCH staff and volunteers, Rotary Club members, public safety employees and more — an example of the community coming together to serve the needs of residents. Sanibel Community Association Executive Director Teresa Hall expressed satisfaction that TCH could be part of the collaboration, adding “It’s at the heart of our mission to do things like this.” Since opening in 1927, it has often been the site of group medical services and inoculations for residents. Before these services became routinely available on island, they were often made available at TCH. Even as late as 1960, after Hurricane Donna, islanders lined up at the facility for their tetanus shots.
