Today, the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools hit the road and surprised the six recipients with the Golden Apple Teacher Award. Award sponsors, selection committee and foundation board members took part in shining the spotlight on the outstanding performance that the winning teachers do for the education system and their students, officials reported.

“Once again, the six recipients of the prestigious Golden Apple Award are representatives of all the outstanding educators we have in the School District of Lee County,” foundation President Marshall T. Bower said. “I can think of no more important profession than teaching. The impact of the teaching profession is felt throughout the entire community and deserves to be applauded.”

Among the winners is Joseph Camputaro, who teaches fifth-grade language arts and social studies at The Sanibel School. He is known for his innovative approach to teaching and great student rapport.

“Being selected as a Golden Apple recipient is a dream come true,” he said on March 15. “There are so many incredible teachers in Lee County and to be a representative of such amazing educators is the highest honor.”

“I started this journey four years ago and I would not be where I am today without the support of my students, family, administrators, peers and the Sanibel community,” Camputaro added. “Receiving this award is humbling and life changing. I am truly grateful.”

Principal Jamie Reid also commented on the achievement.

“We are so proud of Mr. Camputaro,” she said. “We have so many exceptional teachers at The Sanibel School, but he is a true standout. He truly deserves this award and will positively represent all of our amazing teachers.”

The other Golden Apple recipients are: Jamie Ayres, with Cape Coral High School; Nathan Buehler, with Mirror Lakes Elementary School; Melissa Holland, with Tanglewood Elementary School; Marylin Prysi, with Villas Elementary School; and Bryan Williams, with Mariner High School.

The winners were chosen after going through an extensive selection process, which began in September with a community-wide invitation to nominate teachers. The finalists were selected after completing a three-step process, which included a blind comprehensive application, observations in their classroom of their teaching style and skill, and interviews with the selection committee.

The winners of the 34th annual recognition program will be honored at a black-tie affair on June 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Caloosa Sound Convention Center & Amphitheater, at 1375 Monroe St., Fort Myers.
