Shell club adopts motto of ‘The Shell Show Must Go On’
The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s motto is “The Shell Show Must Go On” as it prepares to host the 2021 Virtual Sanibel Shell Show, which will premiere on March 5-6 from noon to 3 p.m. on the club’s YouTube channel. The show schedule and daily links will be posted in advance on the club Website.
Highlighting the show will be over 35 videos from shell artists, museums, institutions, universities and the club. One video will be an overview of the Sanibel public beaches with aerial drone footage and descriptions of which shells can be found at each one. Others include an underwater view of snorkeling on Sanibel, what the beaches look like after a storm, beach etiquette, footage of the live mollusks, what one can find when there are “no” shells on the beach, and how to clean sand dollars and sea urchins.
Research videos will present the science behind estimating the lifespan of horse conchs, ongoing investigations to improve the ocean’s water quality, a seafloor survey of deep-water mollusks like the junonia and a virtual fossil field trip to collect Pleistocene shells. Other videos will explain the history of the show and what a “normal” year looks like, behind-the-scenes tours at museums, and more.
Interactive portions of the show will ask viewers to vote for the “Best Shell” photo from finalists selected out of over 300 photos from 15 countries. Door prize drawings during the two days will be available for viewers who comment on YouTube or the site, or email info@sanibelshellclub.com.
