Sanibel library wrapping up summer reading program

The Sanibel Public Library’s annual summer reading program is coming to a close.
As in years past, participants can read to earn books for their home library and for patients at the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The Sanibel Public Library Foundation matches each book earned with a book for the hospital. Youths can log hours and activities through Aug. 3.
Their earned books can be claimed until Aug. 10 by stopping by the library.
So far, 304 children have logged 106,844 minutes of reading this summer. Since the program’s inception in 2012, participants have helped to contribute over 8,000 books to the hospital.
The foundation, along with the Joan Hunt Cory Children’s Fund, underwrites the program. The Children’s Fund was established in 2008 to honor Cory, a longtime library volunteer and supporter.
Come play in the Think Tank on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in August. The MagixBox projects interactive images from the ceiling to the floor. Squish mosquitoes, crush eggs or make a trail of stars. Playing with the MagixBox teaches youths to use modern technology and to cooperate with others.
Library patrons interested in games can check out board games and puzzles to take home, like Bananagrams, Scrabble, Yahtzee, and Apples to Apples. The library also invites the public to work on puzzles and play chess or other board games.
In addition to books, cooking kits and board games, the library offers Mango – an online language learning tool. Library cardholders can borrow eBooks and audiobooks via the Hoopla or OverDrive Libby apps. Downloadable magazines are available through the RB digital app. Cardholders can also use the popular on-demand video streaming service Kanopy. The newest service allows users to download or stream millions of songs with the Freegal music app. If you need help borrowing from the eShelf, call the library at 239-472-2483 to schedule an appointment with library staff.
At 10 a.m. Aug. 7, licensed insurance professional Anthony Idaspe, with the Informed Choice Insurance Agency, will present a program about Medicare choices. It is for educational purposes, no plan-specific details will be shared. Idaspe is not connected with the federal Medicare program.
